On either side of the river there are trains every few minutes, some small commuter ones likes this one, right through to long freight trains, many carrying new cars.
This is the toll collection point that made the powerful even more wealthy as every ship had to pay before they could proceed.
More trains...
And now the infamous Lorelei Rock where so many ships came to grief whilst watching and listening to the beautiful maiden who resided there
Many a ship is said to lie on the bottom of this bend in the river...
Here is the temptress herself - a VERY small statue near the river bank
The end of the scenic Gorge passage is marked by this skyway along with the large statue of Bismark astride his horse.
Not long after the Gorge the heaven's opened. So it was wonderful to then go to a long lunch whilst the storm raged outside. Timing was perfect as we then had many hours to relax before arriving at Cologne early evening. Wet weather and cruising is not something usually used in the same sentence by the marketers of the cruise lines. Just be aware that bad weather can strike at any time, and even here in late July - mid summer in Europe - rain can make travelling and sightseeing not the golden sun-drenched image we usually have in our minds. But with good companions, great food and onboard entertainment it remains a very relaxing holiday.
