More Zurich

Today we'll look at a few more aspects of Zurich, widely quoted by our guides as one of the most expensive cities in the world.

It's clean, efficient, almost graffiti-free, has very extensive and frequent tram, trolley and train services - and English is spoken as a second language by everyone. The city feels classy, and when you walk the main city shopping thoroughfare - Bahnhof Strasse - then you KNOW it's classy as all the shops that exist here are the very elite of the retail world - from Apple and Dior, to Zara, Tiffany's and of course, the finest of Swiss chocolate shops.

This is specially for my Apple readers...

It's lovely looking at the variety or adornment on the buildings. Take this re-cycled Guild Hall

Later we took a 90 minute cruise on Lake Zurich...

To begin with one needs a floral time call to know the time of departure...

You can see the valley sides surrounding the Lake. These cruises in fact are commuter runs so are great for tourists to travel on.

And  here's a tourist right now...

and his travel companion. We still had rain but the temperature at around 22 degrees was very pleasant

One of the many splendid homes that indicate a very enjoyable lakeside lifestyle...

Lots of little boat houses for the family living behind

This is one of the jetty's picking up and dropping off passengers. Notice the cleanliness, there's always flowers, the red and white Swiss flag flies everywhere, and to the right, the typical 4-6 storey apartment blocks. Hardly anyone owns their own homes - renting is done by some 90+% of the population.

A grand hotel on the shoreline...

Colin took a train and a gondola ride in order to provide this splendid panoramic view of Zurich.

And the next blog will be from Lucerne and Mt Pilatus. Meet you there very soon....

  1. Fantastic photos. During our 2012 trip, we saw a lot of Switzerland, but never made it to Zurich. Will think of you when you're ascending Mt Pilatus -- will never forget that experience. (Pete, hope you're feeling much better.) D&D
